The Day That Answered the Question
I was on my way to photograph a high school prom when I came across a fatal accident on the road.
I stopped. I documented the scene. Then I continued to the prom and spent the evening photographing teenagers stepping into one of the most electric nights of their young lives.
I have thought about that day more times than I can count. Not because it was difficult, though it was. Because of what it clarified.
In one moment, a family's world had changed forever. An hour later, a gymnasium full of kids had no idea anything had happened. Both moments were real. Both deserved to be witnessed with care. And I was the person who had done both.
That is the answer I give now when someone asks what I specialize in.
The Question I Keep Getting Asked
"What do you specialize in?"
I have been asked this since the beginning. The assumption behind it is that a photographer picks a lane and stays there. Weddings or portraits. Commercial or editorial. Choose one, get good at it, repeat.
I understand the logic. I have never been able to follow it.
Not because I lack focus, but because the work itself resists that kind of narrowing. People do not live in one lane. Why would their photographs?
What Versatility Actually Costs
Being able to work across different kinds of sessions does not happen by accident. It is a discipline.
Weddings are emotional and fast. You are making decisions in fractions of a second that you cannot undo.
Portraits are slower and more interior. You are building trust with a person who does not know how to be in front of a camera yet. Sports demand anticipation. Architecture demands patience. Each one asks something different, and each one teaches you something you bring back to the others.
That range keeps the eye sharp. It also means I can walk into almost any situation and know what to do.
What the Work Is Actually For
At the core of all of it is the same thing: storytelling.
A wedding captures the beginning of something. A family session freezes a season that will never look quite the same again. A pet portrait holds onto a connection that words have never been able to explain.
The prom I photographed that October evening is someone's memory now. The teenagers in those images do not know what happened on the road outside. They just know they were young and together and that someone was there to document it.
That is the weight of this work. And it is also the privilege of it.
